How the Expression number is calculated
Assign each letter its value (1 = A, J, S; 2 = B, K, T; and so on through 9 = I, R), add every letter in your full birth name, and reduce to a single digit or a master number. For SARAH JANE MILLER: add the values of all fifteen letters, then reduce the total. How do I calculate the Expression number?
Convert each letter of your full birth name to its number, add them all, and reduce the total. The numerology calculator does it and shows each step so you can check it by hand.
Which letter-to-number chart does the Expression number use?
The common method is the Pythagorean chart, where A to I are 1 to 9 and the sequence then repeats (J=1, K=2, and so on). The Chaldean system assigns different values and is covered on its own page.
Do I use my birth name, my married name, or the name I go by?
The full birth-certificate name is traditional for the core Expression number. A married or chosen name is calculated separately and compared, not used to replace it.
Is the Expression number the same as the Destiny number?
In most modern numerology, yes. 'Expression' and 'Destiny' are two labels for the same total-of-all-letters number.
How is the Expression number different from the Life Path?
The Life Path number comes from your date of birth and describes your overall direction; the Expression number comes from your name and describes the toolkit you bring to that direction.
How is the Expression number different from the Soul Urge and Personality numbers?
All three come from your name but use different letters: the Expression uses every letter, the Soul Urge number uses only the vowels, and the Personality number uses only the consonants.
Can the Expression number be a master number?
Yes. If the letters total 11, 22 or 33 before the final reduction, most readers keep it as one of the master numbers rather than reducing to 2, 4 or 6.
What if my Expression number does not match how I see myself?
That is common and not a problem with the calculation. The descriptions are broad, and self-image is shaped by far more than a name. Keep what is useful and leave the rest.
