How to calculate your Soul Urge number
- Write out your full birth name.
- Pick out only the vowels: A, E, I, O, U. (Y is counted as a vowel when there is no other vowel sound in a syllable, for example in “Lynn”, otherwise it is a consonant. Practitioners differ; pick one rule and stay consistent.)
- Give each vowel its value: A = 1, E = 5, I = 9, O = 6, U = 3.

Which letters count as vowels here, and what about Y and W?
A, E, I, O and U always count. Y counts when it takes a vowel sound in the name (Lynn, Yvette) and W only in rare vowel-sound pairings; sources disagree, so it is worth calculating both ways for borderline names.
Why is the Soul Urge also called the Heart's Desire number?
They are the same number. 'Heart's Desire' simply describes what it is meant to represent: the wish or motivation you carry underneath your outward behaviour.
