How to calculate a Life Path number by hand
Take a birth date of 14 November 1988 (2024-11-14 style: year 1988, month 11, day 14):
- Month: 11 is a master number, keep it as 11 (or reduce to 2 if you prefer the simpler method).
- Day: 14 → 1 + 4 = 5.
- Year: 1988 → 1 + 9 + 8 + 8 = 26 → 2 + 6 = 8.
- Add the three: 11 + 5 + 8 = 24 → 2 + 4 = 6.
So this birth date gives a Life Path 6. The one rule people disagree on is whether to reduce a master-number month or day before adding; both approaches are common, and the calculator above keeps masters where they appear.

What is the Life Path number?
The Life Path is the core number in a numerology chart, derived from your full date of birth. It is described as the broad theme or 'road' of your life. Numerology is a symbolic tradition, not a science.
How do I calculate my Life Path number?
Reduce your birth month, day and year to single digits, add those three numbers together, then reduce the total to a single digit (or to 11, 22 or 33). The Life Path calculator does every step for you.
Should I reduce the year first or just add every digit?
Reduce each component (month, day, year) first, then add and reduce the total. Adding all digits in one long string can give a different answer when master numbers are involved, so the component method is the standard one.
How are master numbers 11, 22 and 33 handled in the Life Path?
If a component total or the final total is 11, 22 or 33 before its last reduction, most practitioners keep it unreduced and read it as a master numbers. Others reduce everything to a single digit; both conventions exist.
Is the Life Path the most important number in a chart?
It is usually treated as the anchor, but a full reading also weighs the Expression, Soul Urge, Personality and cycle numbers, and how they interact. No single number is the whole picture.
What is the difference between the Life Path and the Expression number?
The Life Path comes from your birth date and describes your overall direction; the Expression number comes from the letters of your full birth name and describes your abilities and how you operate.
Can my Life Path number change?
No. It is fixed by your date of birth for life. Only name-based numbers can be recalculated, for example after a marriage or a legal name change.
Does my Life Path predict what will happen in my life?
No. It offers a suggested theme for reflection, not a forecast of events. Numerology should never override medical, financial, legal or practical judgement.
What if my Life Path description does not sound like me?
That is common. The descriptions are broad and easy to apply to many people, an effect known as the Barnum or Forer effect. Keep what is useful as a prompt and set the rest aside.
