The two main systems
Pythagorean name numerology is the system used by most English-language books and online readings. Letters are assigned values 1 to 9 in sequence: A=1, B=2, up to I=9, then J starts again at 1. It is simple and consistent.
Chaldean name numerology is older and assigns values 1 to 8 based on the sound and vibration attributed to each letter rather than alphabetical order, and it treats the name you actually use as more significant than the birth name. It is fiddlier and less standardised. See the dedicated Chaldean numerology guide.
Pythagorean vs Chaldean, in short
- Pythagorean: alphabetical values, birth name, widely used, easy to reproduce.
- Chaldean: sound-based values 1 to 8, the name in daily use, older, more variation between sources.
- They will usually give different numbers. Neither is 'correct'; pick one system and stay with it.

For the core Pythagorean numbers, use your full name as it appears on your birth certificate. If your name has changed through marriage or choice, calculate a second set for the new name and compare: numerology reads a name change as adding an influence, not erasing the original.
What the name numbers tell you
The Expression number (all letters) is read as your natural aptitudes; the Soul Urge number (vowels) as your inner motivation; the Personality number (consonants) as your first impression. A reading looks at how they combine with your Life Path.

Questions
Name numerology FAQ
What is name numerology?
Name numerology is the branch that derives numbers from the letters of a name, mainly the Expression, Soul Urge and Personality numbers. It is a symbolic practice, not a scientific one.
Which numbers come from a name?
The Expression number from all letters, the Soul Urge number from the vowels, the Personality number from the consonants, and some minor figures such as the first-vowel or 'cornerstone' letter.
Should I use my birth name or my current name?
The full name on your birth certificate is the traditional basis for the core numbers. A current or chosen name is calculated separately and compared.
What happens to my numbers when I get married or change my name?
A new name produces new name-based numbers. Most readers keep the birth-name numbers as the foundation and read the new name as an added influence rather than a replacement.
How are nicknames and shortened names handled?
They are calculated in the same way and treated as a secondary layer, useful for seeing how you present in everyday life versus your full formal name.
Pythagorean or Chaldean: which name system should I use?
Pythagorean (A to I as 1 to 9, then repeating) is the common Western default. Chaldean numerology uses a different chart and the name you are known by. Pick one and stay consistent.
How are letters with accents or non-English alphabets treated?
Most Western practitioners transliterate the name into the Latin alphabet and drop diacritics before assigning values. There is no universal standard, so note the choice you made.
Can changing my name 'improve' my numerology?
Some traditions offer 'name correction' for this, but there is no evidence a spelling change alters your life. Treat such claims, especially paid ones, with caution.
What if my legal name has changed more than once?
You can calculate each version and compare them. The birth name stays the reference point; later names show as successive influences.
